Subject: Right style for a racing mind

Hi there,

I am would like some advice on the most appropriate yoga style for me. I have a propensity to suffer with depression and anxiety as a result of my often racing thoughts. I have practised Ashtanga for the past two years and it has been of great benefit to me. It leaves me feeling refreshed, feeling clean and full of energy. However, it can really set my mind off. I'm beginning to think that it is too rajasic for me. I would welcome some comments on other styles that I might try or even some pranayama practices that might be of benefit to me. I try to practice Yoga Nidra regularly but often find that an Ashtanga practice and yoga nidra do not mix well at the same time of day. Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks,

Namaste,

Simon

What you need to do is: Forget about style names. Then, try to find a really experienced teacher. And, explain him/her your situation and intention, practice what is instructed, and you shall form your own style of dealing with your own situation. If you are in Virginia, see me.

As is often the case, Neel makes valid points.
We cannot advise on the most appropriate style for you.
However, it sounds to me like you've already identified a direction with your own practice of Svadhyaya. Through your self inquiry you've unearthed that the current practice(s) are not serving you as you need to be served.

If it is the Yang practice that is not suiting you then perhaps seek out a practice that might have a better balance between yin and yang. Consider sampling a few classes and continue with one(s) that DO suit you.

Simon - you have had some good advice already, however I will add that you can probably adjust your practice on your won if you wish. In your home practice, cut down the number of poses you do in your sequence by maybe half. Take time in each pose and come to tadasana between each pose. Turn down the ujjayi a few notches or even ignore it and use normal breathing. That may help all by itself.

Two years seems to be a key number for yoga practitioners. We hear a lot about people who change styles at about this point. Hmmmm..... interesting. Maybe one of our intrepid college students will study the phenomenon some day.
