I'm looking to get into yoga for the new year and would like some opinions on Yoga Apparel. Of the following which retailer do you all prefer?

you could just buy a pair of shorts, and maybe a tank top...
and then you could use the money you saved on props...

i suppose it depends on what yoga exercises you are performing...

I'm all about clothes that I find at TJ Maxx or other cheapie places-- I usually do Old Navy tank tops with generic bottoms. I'm not into the fancy stuff at $60 for a pair of pants.....

Walmart sweat pants: $5
Walmark T-Shirt: $5
Looking good, and saving money: Priceless

For all the other bhogis there are designer yoga clothes, for the real yogi nothing but ashes and sackcloth will suffice.

i buy fair trade. this might require "designer" labels, but for me, it's important to live my values as best i can.

therefore, i buy fair trade clothing. I find prana to be very well made. I bought a pair of their $65 yoga pants about 5-6 years ago and they still look great. When i buy other brands (fair trade or otherwise), they look great for about a year.

i also like american apparel. they have nice stuff at a good price. it's also fair trade. it's less expensive than prana by a great deal. i found their tanks to be great, their pants are good but i feel they'll probably only last another year (so, maybe two years). and that's of hard wear, btw.

i'm very hard on my clothes, so they have to be sturdy.

last year, my resolution was to buy fair trade. and so, i do that. sometimes, it means waiting and saving up, or having only one pair of jeans (like now), but that's what it is.

ZB, I like & admire your dedication to fair trade; however, how can one survive without Levi 501s? Maybe it's a guy thing but button-fly is something I gotta have even if they are blood jeans

(Note: OK, I'm joshing a bit. If they WERE made by slave labor or similar, I'd learn to sew and put my own buttons on).

it definitely still counts.

i was glad that they were, because the jeans that fit well are levis. now, they strive to do fair trade with their international makers, but only guarantee their made in the USA/Canada ones as being "truly fair trade." so, you have to look on the labels.

i look on the inner label to see where it's made, and i look for US and Canada. in a pile of jeans at a shop, you'll find about half are made in the US/Canada.

I like whatever fits, is comfortable, and functional for me, which may not be what works for you. I usually find I don't like a lot of things from one place. I find pants that fit one place, good tops here and there. My favorite yoga pants got years ago from LL Bean and they don't make them anymore. Prana stuff is nice but their sizes are all over the place and often runs really small, so hard to buy online and often there's no size that fits me.

What about Mishogawear?
All kidding aside, I like all yoga clothes from all makes. Most important is that they can take a beating with repeated washings, not hand washing and hang drying but washing machine and dryer cycles. If it falls apart, I will not purchase again.
I too like fair trade Zoe. I use some of AA clothes for my tie dyes but I'm not too happy with the quality.
I found a new manufacturer and wholesale distributer before the holidays. Excellent quality and service, and a big plus is that you can purcashe pcs (amercian made). I'm not sure if they sell to the public since I have a wholesale tax ID #.
Here's there link. Zoe, if you like AA, you'll love the quality of their line.

My yoga apparel: old race t-shirt (I do lots of foot races), runner's shorts, usually with spandex shorts underneath.

That's about it. As long as stretching is not inhibited and I don't make others around me sick (by showing them more than they care to see, especially during inversions), I am ok.

If you can't find Mishogawear that's just right, I recommend Skakti--they have the sexiest stuff I'm a thinking.

Why would you possibly need apparel information in order to "get into yoga" for the new year?

Fair trade is a lovely idea. As far as going the distance, I've had my current yoga clothes for about 4-5 years. I think they're starting to fade a bit, since I like black, but other than that nothing much.

Then I should swing by poll choice number three (Victoria's Secret) to see what they might offer me in terms of "marvelous" yoga apparel.

mish:

thanks for the recommendation. i checked them out and they look great. i'll have to look into ordering from them.

it's tough to find certain cuts that suit me, and this site has many. ijust couldn't tell if their tanks had shelf bras.

anyway, it's a great resource!

gj:

yeah, i'm REALLY hard on my clothing, though. i tear through stuff. LOL also, i need to look 'professional' so that makes a difference. i can't wear anything with holes in it, etc.

Interesting, how do you tear through clothing? ATM none of my stuff has holes, and I use it pretty hard. I've got a regular practice, and it's pretty hard core.

Some folks just seem to be able to wear stuff out. Mr. Tourist used to wear holes in the soles of his good quality dress shoes. He has already worn a good amount of the colour off his new (1 year old) leather chair. If I look a little older than I am, that's why...

I'm guessing Zoe tears her clothes rock climbing. Are you still rock climbing Zoe?

No, but the colour in my hair seems to be fading and some of my moving parts don't work so well. He once broke the pedal arm right off his racing bike (not the pedal falling off - the metal arm snapped in half!) so I am hoping I don't lose a hand or foot - foot more likely if he steps on it while we are dancing

i haven't been climbing in a while, actually, though that would also do it. i have actually had a shirt torn completely off while climbing. it got caught on one of the clips (i was learning how to lead climb and so i had a top rope attached as well as the lead rope to clip along the way there), and i got about one point up from the clip (between clips), and fell, and my shirt got caught, and the belayer had given me a lot of slack and so it was a heck of a fall (a good 4-6 feet), and my shirt was up on the clip, and there i was in bra and jeans. lol lucky me, it was a cute bra.

and lucky me, i carry extra clothes in my car.

but, as tourist mentioned, i'm just hard on things. i tear through shoes like nobody's business. i tear through clothes just as fast. i just seem to wear them hard. no clue why.

i mean, my mom can have pristine clothes for YEARS--and my stuff looks old in a matter of months. and i mean, really old--ratty looking!

when it comes to yoga clothes, i don't just have fact that i wear things hard, i also have the fact that i'm usually wearing the clothing all day long between teaching gigs, while teaching and doing other stuff (which includes yoga, walking, climbing when i was able to get there, and so on). add this to the washing/drying cycles (i typically wash things 1-2 times a week), and you have a recipe for wearing things out.

but shoes--oh my goodness do i wear out shoes. LOL
