| Does anyone know who sells longer mats for Ashtanga practice?
It's not supposed to matter, that hundreds to thousands of years ago those doing Ashtanga did not even use mats, but considering a) jump throughs land your feet way beyond your hands which are usually placed towards the top of the mat, b) chakrasana roll backs to chatvari vinyasa 4 lands the feet way behind where the mat ends, are there longer mats sold for Ashtanga?
I find myself having to move my hands backwards in adho mukha svanasana in preparation for the jump-throughs so that my feet do not extend beyond the front of the mat. But this disturbs my flow and concentration. I cannot do chakrasana yet, so it's not an immediate problem so was just wondering. It will also be a bigger roll to carry around. I know I'm supposed to be detached from all of this, but I'm not quite there yet. Thank you. |

| my mandara mat is significantly longer than standard sticky mats i have seen.
i also know that manduka makes longish mats.

How much longer are they? Around 2 ft? Manduka mats are so so expensive  They are considered the "elite" here, where I practise. So are lululemon-wear

| But, sticky mat is NOT good for Ashtanga Style Exercise. Actually, NO mat should be used for Ashtanga Style exercise. I am not able to describe why here. But, what I recommend for Ashtaga Vinyasa exercise is: a Mud Floor, or a Real Wooded Floor (not fake wood). |

| Manduka and Mandara both make mats that are around 85". I think I have seen a 100 inch mat someplace, but I imagine it would be hard to fit in some studios. I don't do ashtanga but am under the impression many people use rugs rather than mats, or a rug on top of a mat if the rug slides. Might want to look into that. I still don't think they're that long though, so people must manage without the length. |

| Actually, I may have wrongly stated. What I mean by Mud Floor is: Natural Ground that is covered by some material which makes it solid enough to not raise the dust around. Some thing like thatched floor with cow dung covering.
Or, soft natural wood.

| I have the same problem.
I've been told of a place in the industrial district of Sao Paulo that sells mats - or rather the material they are made of - by foot. Apparently it's quite cheap. This post may finally inspire me to get off my lazy ass and drive over there.
Now if only they'd make them wider as well - am I the only one who hates pressing his heels against the floor in kurmasana and upavishta konasana? |
