Weights Before or After Yoga?

Subject: Weights Before or After Yoga?


Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and hope I am posting my question in the right section. My strength training routine consists of lifting weights and/or calesthenics (pullups, pushups, dips, etc) and was wondering the best way to incorporate yoga. Should I do yoga before or after strength training?

It does depend on what types of yoga you are doing.

Gentle restorative poses, certainly after, but if you're working on touch arm balancing poses like crow (bakasana) or even the sun salutation series, you might want to do your yoga routine before, so that your body isn't too exhausted from the weights to maintain proper form.

great question. For sure after. You tend to have some laxity in your tendons and ligaments after yoga. Very dangerous to do weights after. I hurt my back very badly three years ago doing so.

Not to mention that at the conclusion of your asana practice it is most appropriate for integration that the nervous system be parasympathetic. And that's not much of a state in which to "pump iron".

Keep in mind however that it can be done in whatever order you see fit. You get to choose. But for safety and actually reaping the harvest of benefits that BOTH offer, yoga after.
