Hi folks,
can anyone please recommend a good book that would introduce the philosphy and history of yoga. I'm NOT looking for info on how to do the asanas, but rather about yoga as a whole, the thought behind it, how it fits into hinduism/other traditions, the different types of yoga and how they differ, etc. I tried one of the translations of the Yoga Sutras but it was written in a style that I didn't really find accessible or understandable, and I kept on having to look up words and concepts in other sources (eg the gunas). Thanks!
Amy

Hi Amy,

Welcome to the forum.

I recommend reading any books by Georg Feuerstein, the famous Yoga researcher and historian. His books are very detailed indeed.

This is his website:

A useful reference book of his is the Encycolopedic Dictionary of Yoga.

The introduction to Light on Yoga is a fairly comprehensive look at yoga in general, as well
