Subject: New location. Negotiating pay.

My husband recently got relocated to Whidbey Island, WA (he's in the Navy). As such, I'm now in the market for finding new places to teach. My question is, what's the best way to determine what a fair rate to ask for when interviewing for positions? Generally I teach classes at gyms, which usually pay per class taught. However, I have no idea what the general rate is for this area for yoga instructors. Any ideas for how I should go about finding this information out? For those of you in the northern Washington area, your input is especially appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Dear Majestic: This is my suggestion:

a) If you are extremely demanded for whatever reasons: knowledge in particular skill, affiliation to particular school or trademark, or beautiful look (yes, this is true!), you should demand whatever you feel you should get. May be between 75 and 200 per class.

b) If you are a slightly above average Yoga Teacher, you should look for around 30 to 35 per class.

c) If you are not above average Yoga Teacher, just accept whatever they give for now. And, later go with the future plan.

No problem.

The gym range is from about $27 an hour up to about $40 in the Seattle area. It might drop over in the San Juans where you are.
