Subject: bhastrika

Greetings
Bhastrika has very many variations. Some are more effective than others. Most are reasonably good. Some , taught widely accross the internet and other places should only be attempted by people well versed and expierienced in the effects of bhastrika. One does not have to perform like an Olympic athlete to gain great results and such practising can injure ones body to the extent that it could take a lot of time and care to repair. Common sence approach ? ... Do only what feels comfortable at the time.
Everything in the body is joined together , you cant move something without the rest being moved in some way.
The chest is passive during Bhastrika.
You are sitting. Observe your navel. There is a point where your navel is netural. Push the navel from here towards the spine and we have "Forced exhalation". Take the navel away from the spine and we have "Forced inhalation" This then is the netural point.
All bhastrika is done with the abdominal muscles. Chest is passive.
At first abdominal panting in Bhastrika style uses a lot of energy as the muscles are unused to this activity. Do too much too soon and or too hard and one becomes very tired, perhaps for a few days after. If the body is dehydrated , or dehydrates during practice the muscles have difficulty cleaning themselves and this also can cause tiredness.
The abdomen should be pretty equally moved each side of the netural point. This is an important point. In as much as Bhastrika is a breathing practice and one would think it involves the breathing apperatus only , in fact Bhastrika is also a Manipur stimulating practice.
Bhastrika cleans and heats Ida , Pingala and Sushumna and balances Ida and Pingala.
Kapalbhati does this also , though gentler and with more emphasis on the cleaning.
Dont be fooled. Both are cleaners . Both are heaters. Phisicaly both clean the lungs. They strip exess mucus from the lungs. Large amounts of practice can rapidly and radicaly reduce the mucus lining within the lungs. The mucus lining is a proctive agent. Bhastrika and Kapalbhati therefore leave one unprotected towards smoking. Practicers should not smoke.
Heavy practicers may find weight loss. They may also find tiredness in the joints. Weight loss will balance in the end. Tiredness in the joints will be alieveated by a teaspoon or so of raw butter each day. Salted or unsalted , organic or not, it does not matter. On a sandwich is fine.
Swami Sivananda 's book The science of Pranayama is available on the internet. It is freely available. I recomend it. Swami Satyananda's book " A Systematic Course In The Ancient Tantric Techniques Of Yoga And Kriya" is probably one of the best books available in yogic matters. Search the keyword " SATYANANDA" Another extreemly informative book is "Prana , Pranayama and Pranavidya" by Paramahansa Niranjananda Saraswati.
