Subject: Admin Question Regarding Participation / Dead Logins / http 503s

I believe the yoga.com/forums was dead earlier this year for a week, perhaps longer and upon returning was only semi-functional. At this time I've noted a very low frequency of posts, on average 50% fewer compared to this same time last year. The drop seems to have occurred at the same time of the forums being broken, August of 2008. Also, numerous login names appear dead, that is when presented on a page (like mine, to the right of this page) they are not a link leading to a page describing the person. And lastly, just during my session this evening I experienced nearly a half dozen http 503 (temporary failure) and I see no other registered users posting.

I have no specific question here but does anyone, particularly of the admin variety have comments?

Yes, we did have a lot of trouble with the board, yes, we lost a lot of regulars who posted a lot, and I suspect quite a few regular readers/lurkers. Yes, the board still gives me error messages more frequently than I like, especially when I am doing "housekeeping" and getting rid of spam.

A couple of our regulars have also had a few extra chores of their own - having babies, world traveling, etc., so that is the normal ebb and flow of the board.

Please do send an email to Piel, our admin, if you experience any problems. It is quicker and simpler than contacting a moderator and having us contact him.

Thank you for your responses thus far and pardon the seemingly technical nature of the inquiry. I've made the post not to address any specific problem of my own but to raise awareness of the issues in general. I would like to see a full and swift recovery as I've found the conversations here invaluable and it's disappointing to see it waning. I will contact Piel and alert him to my observations.

Thank you.

Actually, if people wanted to be on the forum, they would be...as Tourist suggested. I don't think this is an adminstrator issue. Right now everyone is busy celebrating the holidays, having babies, living life, etc.

Why don't you go see if you can start up a thread...if it's an interesting subject, I'm sure we'll all start chiming in. Is there anything in particular you would like to talk about??

Yup, we had problems. We tried to fix those problems, but the problems came back. Then we made upgrades to not have to address those problems again. Then I went to Mexico on a business trip and now it's Christmas time.

We know what's been going on and are working as best we can to address them. I'm hoping to work on the boards in the next few days.

Hi Piel - I am getting used to the new format. The only time it seems really unwieldy is when there is a very long thread and it shows all of the posts for all time.

Happy New Year everyone!

It is unfortunately the nature of information technology, the human fills the gap which has not yet been automated. Thus the admin must fix when all others are sleeping. And upon their awakening, they notice not a single disturbance. Perchance they do, may all efforts pause whilst the admin, again, fixes. It is the ultimate cross to bear in the modern day.

Don't worry....the good news is that you just simply write a program, install it...and walla, all problems vanished. Unless of course, you messed up and have to re-write it again..heehee Oh my goodness, I'm having moments with my Father who's a systems analyst...was a systems analyst. Although..I'm trying to say that he still is because officially he has not left this planet yet. Nevermind...

The new format seems nicer.

This board has always had problems with slow response and complete unavailability, I'm sorry to say (after about 4 years of intermittent posting here). But I haven't been on it much this fall (wicked busy!! wicked, wicked wicked, busy!!), so I can't say much about the most recent issues. There were some massive problems in Sept/Oct (trojans, etc), but those seem to have been cured.

I wonder whether the slowing traffic is just a sign of changing interest in yoga, or whether yoga.com just doesn't have the kind of dynamic content that draws eyes. I mean, I never shop here, and I don't read the front page articles....

Anyway, thanks, Piel, for keeping this forum available to our community. Despite the complaints, your efforts are very much appreciated.
