Sitting with an erect posture and extended spine:

1. Inhale for four counts, exhale for eight counts; repeat.

AND/OR

2. Using your ring finger and thumb to alternately close your left and right nostrils, inhale four slow counts through the left nostril, exhale four counts through the right nostril, inhale four counts through the right nostril, exhale four counts through the left nostril; repeat.

Focus on your breathing and the counting. If thoughts interrupt, just let them appear and disappear like the bubbles in a glass of champagne or soda that appear at the bottom and disappear at the top. Do not hold on to thoughts or repress them. If they appear, just acknowledge them and let them go. Relax and don't force either your mind or your body.

Do not repeat to the point of hyperventilation. After several repetitions, rest before continuing. If you start to feel "light-headed", it is time to rest.

Breathe evenly and deeply. Feel your lower ribs expanding with each inhale and contracting with each exhale. Your abdomen should not be extending and your upper chest/shoulders should not be lifting.

After you finish, remain seated and breathe normally until you feel ready to quietly get up and continue what you were doing.

The aim of breathing exercises is to encourage gentler, more relaxed breathing. For this one needs to breath from the diaphragm and abdomen rather than chest. One needs to drop their shoulders, relax the stomach and breath calmly and appropriately.

Here are a few breathing techniques;

Pranayama - It purifies the mind and body by creating balance and energy.

Kapalabhati - It generates heat and moves the energy, thus purifying the body.

Nadi Sodhana - Breathing with alternate nostrils, is calming.

I am an avid follower of Silva Method.

The idea is to relax and immerse ourselves in Alpha stage.
In alpha stage then we hypnotize ourselves to reduce our
stress.

They have a free audio bonus for this, here you the direct
link. Let me know if you enjoy it ;)

alternate nostril breathing is very calming and balancing for the mind. simply use the thumb to close the left nostril while inhaling thru the right nostril. then use the ring finger of the same left hand to close the right nostril and exhale thru the left nostril. do this at least 6 times, slow and deliberate at your own pace. use the technique as often as needed!

I endorse the views of debbiew8182.

Alternate nostril breathing is very calming and regular practice of this will help you to keep your high blood pressure in check, that is, if you have any.

Correct breathing Breathing is the road to good health and a relaxed mind. Most of us have forgotten to even breathe correctly. Practicing of Anulom-Vilom, which is how the alternate-nostril-breathing-exercise is known in Pranayama, is great for relaxing.

Take up hatha yoga. Slow down movement in and out of postures by atleast 10-20 times even if it winds up your teacher, so you can feel when you hold your breath or use unnecessary muscular effort, observing where your attention is being drawn to. Then take this out of the class into your daily life. This will help more than practising a breathing exercise and then returning to poor habits or patterns.

‘Yogah Chitta Vritti Nirodhah’ - It means Yoga is a process of gaining control over the mind. It is Mastery over the mind. There are many ways to get control over the restless mind. But the ancient Yogis stated that Control of the Breath is a prerequisite to control over the mind and body. I also realize the same Vibes…..
May be it is different to every individual….

I use a very simple breathing technique which I do in the office when I feel stressed. This involves:
* Inhale for 3 seconds, hold 1 second, exhale for 6 seconds
* Inhale for 4 seconds, hold 1 second, exhale for 8 seconds
* Inhale for 5 seconds, hole 1 second, exhale for 10 seconds
Hope this helps!

The most important one in Yoga is Pranayama. Pranayama is control of breath, breathing & blood circulation system, heart have close relation between them. Simple breathing exercises like Deep Breathing, Quiet Breathing help reduce the mental stresses and strains.

I think for stress relief these are the important steps :
1) Set aside time in your daily schedule
2) Don’t practice when you’re sleepy
3) Choose a technique that appeals to you
This would benefit a lot because I use to practice daily.
