Subject: Question about Banhas

I've been practicing Ashtanga yoga in the mornings. I don't have an instructor (I haven't been able to find one in my area), but have been using DVDs and written material.

Basically, I'm just practicing on the mat every morning.

Anyway, I'm confused about the Bandhas (I haven't been able to find a lot of info on those). Specifically:

- What exactly are the purpose of the Bandhas?
- When and how do you use the Bandhas throughout your practice?

Any information or resources you could point me to would be appreciated.

Sincerely,
Chris

I'll let Nick or someone far more experienced than me tackle those questions. For what it's worth, though, I remember bandhas being the most frustrating part of the practice for me, and that was with the help of good teachers.

I'm sure some will disagree, but one teacher finally told me to pay attention to my jalandara bandha and forget the other two until I had it down. That one was surprisingly easy once I didn't feel overwhelmed with the other locks, so I moved on to uddiyana bandha (sp) and finally mulabandha. I still have a lot of trouble with this last one, but I can tell from experience that the first two made the actual postures far, far easier.

Good luck!

Hi all,
Hee hee, thanks Thyago, my favourite subject .
To me, there is a vast amount of confusion surrounding the use of bandha in the Astanga world, so Chris' problem is by no means uncommon. in fact, it should be even more common-too many students assume that they have the actions of bandha mastered far too soon-they are a subtle technique that is most noticeable when a number of different factors are incorporated into asana and vinyasa-posture and movement.
If you do a search on this site, Chris, and type in 'bandha nick,' you'll see that this subject has come up a few times, and you may even find the answer to your questions in those posts. You will also find that different teachers have markedly different rationale, logic, and strategies for bandha-so whatever advice I give, is sure to be countermanded somewhere. Just thought I would say that so you could never say I'd led you up the garden path (Brit expression for throwing you a red herring-hang on ).
Feel free to ask questions, I can respond more specifically to you, if it helps.

Nick

Hi Thyago,
Believe me, I'm trying Thanks for pointing out that post-glad I didn't have to write it all over again. I think Chris needs some more practical stuff as well, but I'll wait for his input.
Take care
Nick
