Twisted my back I guess doing the laundry. But, in Hatha Yoga class last week didn't realize how badly until I could not do a mat position. Combined efforts of my chiropractor, therapeutic massage, ice pack, simple stretches and orthopedic specialist have all helped. The LMT worked out the knot in the glutes but the nerve pain -- while subsiding-- is still present.

Who else has experienced this injury (or maybe not) and has words of encouragement/wisdom? Thank you.

I need some clarification in order to respond Mykie.

Your title says psoas. Obviously that is a hip flexor located deep in the abdominal cavity. Then you go on to talk about twisting your back, knot in your glutes, and nerve pain.

Back or front please?

Pain is in the left back and continuing to improve. I do a lot of sitting at work, so pain became much worse after a week at work. Will begin physical therapy soon. Pain does not really shoot down my leg -- stays localized where the leg joins the hip. Comical describing an injury, isn't it. Thank you.

So that doesn't strike me as a psoas strain. If it is a muscular issue in the area you describe it could be quadratus lumborum. If it is not muscular it could be the sacroiliac joint or surround connective tissue.

What are you referencing by "nerve pain"?

I'm going to respond to "what am I referencing by nerve pain." Well, the left glute has a continual deep ache, and then there is a catch when I try to roll over either direction. No shooting pain, but sometimes a deeper burning pain. THis is what I am calling the nerve pain, and it seems to radiate or refer to the left hip, wher the top of the leg is attached to the torso. It subsides when I stop, but the sore feeling is always there. It still continues to improve with moderate stretching. And, is much worse in the morning. I did receive a script for PT so will arrange for that now.

I miss yoga very much.

The P/T will, if skilled, rule out disk issues. Since you do not present with pain radiating down the leg or numbness in the toes it's less likely there's a pinched nerve. But possible, anything in possible.

Nerve pain is typically very intense and sharp. And I'm no very doubtful you've got a psoas strain at all.
It is possible you've pulled the hamstring attachment at the sitting bone (ischial tuberosity) especially if you work your hamstring openers aggressively and do so with your mind somewhere other than the belly of the muscle.

It is also possible you've got some chronic spasm in the pirifomis and that may be pressuring the sciatic nerve. But again you do not present in that way (in what little presentation is offered through words here).

If you are still interested in feedback from a yogic point of view then more info after the initial pt visit would be helpful.

I am late in responding due to not enjoying sitting at the computer. Much healing has occurred with 2 xs weekly PT and the "exercises." Probable cause a degenerative disc. Pain was not shooting but did refer from left hip to left shin. As the disc area scars am now doing special exercises to allow flexibility. Hope to return to yoga and the gym in a month. Will resume walking this week.
