the practice is to get the hot salty water and run it from one nostril to the other.
simple, right?
http://www.yoga-age.com/asanas/neti.html
thats a pretty decent manual i'd say.
...
figuring something out on your own requires some amount of trial and error.
depending on your awareness of your sinus passages, it may require more error.
or trial.
experimenting with neti is fairly harmless. make sure the water is hot enough, or you will mess up your sinuses for the remainder of the day.
if you are currently experiencing acute symptoms of sinus infection, cold or flu i would caution against starting the practice.
in new york, i'm sure you can find a teacher if you look hard enough.
...
speaking as someone with a long history of sinus issues that have been helped by yoga practices i would recommend practices other than jala neti to clear the blockage of your sinuses.
if you inspect the geometry of your sinus passages, you will probably notice that they are constricted not so much by blockages inside, but by the tension of your facial muscles and fascia.
chronically held positions of stress narrow and harden the fine network of spaces inside your skull and make proper drainage difficult at best.
in order to re-educate the facial muscles and sinus passages i would recommend proper practice of asanas and pranayama as instructed by a competent teacher.
by proper practice i mean a practice that is slow and meticulous enough to allow you to develop awareness inside the skull/facial structure.
over time the facial structure will reorganize.

Hello, yesterday I tried with one of my yoga friends, who have been practicing Jala neti since couple of years. But whole day I had some kind of irritation (not really headache) after jala neti. Today I am feeling better. She said it happens first time...
I want to ask you people if this is normal for everybody.

Thanks

Namaste Jaimy,
You should have dried up your nostril after Jala Neti kriya. In our tradition we do this dry up technique by forcefully exhalation through the nostril. I even don’t know whether you have sinusitis problem. Please take care..
I wish you all the best

My country is surrounded by the sea and we all swim a lot here. While playing in the sea, when we were kids, we were often cleaning our nose and throat with sea water, by inhaling it through the nostrils and taking it out through the mouth. This was also doing us good when we had a cold and also parents were advising their kids to do it. Could we call it a kind of a “folk” jala neti?

Namaste Kristi,
Yes you can call it Jala Neti, but a little advance technique. In traditional Yoga we have this technique by inhaling water through the nostrils and taking it out through the mouth. However, you used to do this kriya naturally, while sea bathing. Thanks for sharing....
